News on Archdiocese of Washington Haiti Response

and...Some Ways You Can Respond

1.  Parishes are asked to support relief efforts through a special collection over the next two weekends.  Bishop Knestout has requested pastors to arrange for this in their parishes.  Funds will be sent to Catholic Relief Services designated for Haiti.

2.  Mass for Haitian Community, in French.  St. Camillus Church, 1600 St. Camillus Drive, Silver Spring, MD  20903.  Friday, January 15, 2010 at 7:00 P.M.  Presiding:  Archbishop Donald Wuerl; Principal Celebrant:  Fr. Jean Marie Kabango-Lenge, O.F.M.  Preceded by multi-cultural Rosary at 6:40.  All welcome.

3.  At least a dozen parishes in the Archdiocese have close ties with Haiti through parish twinning and/or support of medical clinics and schools.  In addition, an estimated 20,000 Haitians live in the Washington area, many of whom are parishioners.  As those parishes and parishioners hear from Haiti what other needs are, additional relief efforts will be undertaken.

 4.  Resources for parishes, educators, and youth ministers are available on the Catholic Relief Services website.  For prayer services and lesson plans click here and scroll to the bottom of the page.

 5.  For ongoing reports on Haiti and the response of the Catholic Church through Catholic Relief Services, click here.

6. The USCCB reminds Catholics that the annual collection for the Church in Latin America is already scheduled in many dioceses for January 23-24.  They urge Catholics to be generous with this collection as well, as it will help the Church respond to the pastoral needs of the Church in Haiti and other parts of Latin America.

Social Concerns:

Spanish Catholic Center Food Pantry

As the current economical crisis in the US escalates, more and more people are turning to local area food pantires for assistance. We at SJB have a long term relationship with the Spanish Catholic Center Food Pantry in Langley Park. We are the sole support for this food pantry. SCC Food Pantry provides food for 15 families for a 3 month time frame. Our weekly collections average 22 bags of food, but the selection varies dramatically.

We are asking parishioners to bring one or more items of food to ensure that at least these 15 families can eat. The following is a list of suggested non-perishable food donations:
