Adult Confirmation is celebrated once a year at St. Matthew’s Cathedral
in Washington, DC on Pentecost Sunday. The sacrament is administered by the
Cardinal and/or by his auxiliary bishops.
Preparation for the Adult Confirmation takes place in the parish.
Who Is It for?
Baptized and practicing Catholic adults who for some reason have missed confirmation
in their teenage years.
What They Need to Do
- contact the coordinator at 301 622 1122 and ask for an interview
- fill out registration form and present a copy of the baptism certificate
- choose a sponsor
- attend preparation classes
- celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation before confirmation
Sponsors
The requirements regarding sponsors for Confirmation are the same as for godparents
in Baptism:
- sponsors must themselves be confirmed and practicing Catholics and be at least
sixteen years of age,
- in order to express more clearly the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation
and to make the duty and function of the sponsor more effective, it is desirable
that the godparent at Baptism also be the sponsor at Confirmation,
- the sponsor for any candidate can be male or female,
- neither the father nor the mother of a candidate can be a sponsor.
Preparation Classes
Preparation classes for Adult Confirmation are held during Easter time.
Registration deadline is Easter.
