Principal's Note 11/8/16

SJB is launching a new initiative called Parent Ambassadors. The goal is to bring more families to our great Catholic school while boosting parent involvement.

Over the past several months, we have made an effort to improve our marketing, primarily by launching our new website and expanding our online presence. We are also stepping up our recruiting. We have scheduled three Open Houses , including one at night.

It makes sense to feature current SJB parents in our recruitment plan. Parent support has long been one of SJB’s great strengths. Our plan is to use this strength to attract new families and bring them into the SJB community.

There are many ways that Parent Ambassadors will be able to help. They can give guided tours during Open Houses. They can drop off flyers at preschools, child-care centers, churches and  libraries. They can write thank-you letters to the parents who come for tours. They can write reviews on GoogleYelp, and Great Schools, as well as on local forums and listservs.

We will have our first meeting of Parent Ambassadors on Tuesday night, Nov. 15, at 7:30 pm in the Library. Any parent who wants to help us recruit new school families is invited to attend.

At the first meeting, we will begin to prepare and organize our recruitment team. We will discuss our message and our plan, and parents will be assigned roles based on their preferences, limitations and strengths.

Our next step will be to send our Parent Ambassadors into the community to invite, connect and build relationships with parents of prospective students with a simple set of compelling messages about the school.

Our plan is to use Parent Ambassadors throughout the year. Our job is not over when a parent completes an application. We want to help parents once they’ve selected SJB for their child. We want them to feel welcome to attend major events like Arts & Academics and the Spring Play, and we want make sure that our new students and parents adjust well into the new school year.

If you are interested in becoming a Parent Ambassador and coming to the meeting, please send me an email (unless you've already let me know) at brian.blomquist@sjbsilverspring.org.

The Parent Ambassadors program was used effectively by several Catholic schools in Chicago. The SJB School Advisory Board, chaired by Jennifer Hazleton (Ruby 2nd, Sadie 4th, Mary Clare 6th), helped to launch and plan the SJB programJacqueline Dugroo (Joanna 7th, Katherine 3rd) will be the director of the Parent Ambassadors.

SJB Accreditation Visit Scheduled for Monday, Nov. 14

On Monday, an Advanc-Ed accreditation team will visit SJB, observe classes for most of the day, interview teachers and school leaders, and review our progress in academics, instruction, professional development, technology, enrollment, communication, and Catholic identity. It is all part of the accreditation process. SJB was last accredited by Advanc-ed in the spring of 2014.

All grades will have time to shop and preview books at the Book Fair on Thursday, and parents are welcome to shop on Parent-Teacher Conference Day on Friday. Proceeds from the Book Fair will help educational programs including the library.

Parent-Teacher Conference Day is Friday

There will be no school for students on Friday. Please be mindful of the schedule, and please understand that teachers have been instructed to finish each conference on time in the interest of fairness.

I look forward to seeing you on Friday, and I hope you consider the Parent Ambassador Program.
