Principal's Note 1/31/2017

We are celebrating Catholic Schools Week at SJB, and our highlight comes on Thursday when parents visit the school for Open House, Family Mass and Family Lunch. It's a great day for our SJB community, a chance for parents to support their children and learn more about their school day.

It begins at 8:15. Parents should enter through the main doors to the school and wait in the hall by the office. At 8:15, parents can walk to the classrooms. Open House ends at 10:30, and at 10:45 we will all gather in the church for Family Mass, with Family Lunch following in the gym.

A couple of notes about Thursday:

  • Parents are under no obligation to come at the start or to stay until the end of the Open House

  • At 10:40 am, we will ask parents of students in Kindergarten and 1st grade to pick up their children and take them to the church. Parents of older children should go directly to the church and wait for their children to find them. Older siblings will pick up younger siblings before coming to sit with their parents.

  • Teachers will sit with students whose parents couldn’t attend the Liturgy. At the conclusion of Mass, families will be dismissed to walk to the gym for lunch, but please listen for instructions (we will leave in an order determined by last name) so that we don’t all rush in at once.

  • When we are all seated at our lunch tables, Father David will offer a blessing, the students will receive their buffet-line instructions, and two teachers will call families to the lunch line.

  • Lunch was pre-ordered. Students and parents will receive lunch tickets in the classroom before Mass. Please remember to bring your lunch ticket when you line up for lunch. If you didn't pre-order lunch, please remember to bring a lunch for your family because there will not be enough food for same-day sales.

  • Parents who do not plan to come to the Family Mass should send their child's teacher an email to notify them. Those students will sit with their teachers.

Tomorrow we will have a Living Rosary at 2:15 pm. Parents are always invited to come to our Living Rosary.  On Friday, we will celebrate Spirit Day. Students may wear SJB gear with casual attire or their PE uniforms.

This is Mrs. Leishear's Last Week for a While...

Mrs. Leishear is finishing up her last week here before she takes maternity leave. She'll return in May. While she's out, Ms. Shannon Mester will be the substitute Art teacher. Ms. Mester is a recent graduate from University of MD with a degree in Art Education and is very excited to join the staff and work with all of the SJB students!

7th grade bake craft sale.JPG

Following the destruction in Haiti caused by Hurricane Matthew last fall, our 7th graders have pitched in to help our sister parish in Baraderes by raising money to help in reconstruction. On Tuesday, February 14, the 7th grade is hosting a Valentine-themed Craft and Bake Sale. All of the money raised will be sent to Haiti. The sale will be hosted in the 6th grade classroom from 12:00 to 12:40. Craft prices will range from 10¢ to $2. Baked good prices will range from 25¢ to $1. The students have been working very hard on making crafts such as friendship bracelets, bookmarks, pillows and rosaries. There will also be many delicious desserts to choose from. Thank you to the 5th and 6th graders who have offered to help bake desserts. This is a great way to serve others and celebrate Valentine’s Day. We hope to see you there! -- Riley Langan, 7th grade

Check Folders for Bingo Tickets

Bingo Tickets are in today's gold folder. If you did not receive your tickets, Courtney Gardner did not receive your order (excluding those orders received today, Tuesday, January 31). Please send in your orders by tomorrow so there is an accurate head count to purchase prizes and snacks.

Bowie Baysox Reading Program Is Under Way

The Read & Hit A Home Run Bowie Baysox Annual Reading Program is now underway.  The Baysox will deliver the posters this Friday as we have a special kickoff to the program.  All the students have to do is read four books inside or outside the classroom between now and Monday, April 3. (Teachers in the lower grades may adjust the program as they see fit.)  Books read anytime in January can be included. After reading each book, students simply mark the poster hanging in the classroom. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a free ticket to the Bowie Baysox baseball game on Saturday, May 13, at 7:05 pm.  We always have a fantastic time at the game while celebrating reading.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Maria Hippchen at 301-439-2613 or hippchen@juno.com.
