A Few Words About Cursive
SJB students are required to complete handwritten assignments in cursive. Research shows the value in proper longhand writing. SJB students learn cursive in 3rd grade. They consistently write in cursive from 4th grade to 8th grade. At times, teachers will not require students to write in cursive. For example, manuscript might be clearer when responding on true-false, multiple-choice, or matching sections of quizzes and tests. Cursive is not required in classroom note taking.
If a student is having particular difficulty writing in cursive, the teacher will offer the student an exemption from cursive writing. We believe that cursive writing has value, but not at the expense of core content, and manual coordination is a greater challenge for some students. If the teacher believes it will help, the teacher may ask the exempted student to practice cursive writing on the side.
