St. John The Baptist implemented its English Language Learning (ELL) program in 2010 to address a demographic increase in students whose home language is not English.

The program is funded by St. John the Baptist along with a grant from Montgomery Public Schools. The ELL program focuses in the lower level grades one, two and kindergarten. ELL instruction takes place in a pull out, small group setting. Students meet two times a week with Mrs. Pifer for 30-45 minutes. ELL curriculum targets individual English Language needs, and enriches/reinforces ongoing classroom instruction. ELL focuses in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and understanding the English language. Its curriculum focuses on whole language activities and instructional games emphasizing our Catholic faith, holidays, American traditions , social skills and literature. ELL instruction routinely incorporates iPad and other forms of technology. Students are selected for ELL instruction based on qualifying test scores of Maryland state approved testing along with administrative and teacher input.
