Farewell to Ms. Diaz
This is the last week for Ms. Astrid Diaz, a classroom aide at SJB for the past nine years. Ms. Diaz has taken a new position with a company in a different field of work. Friday will be her last day as a classroom aide at SJB.
Ms. Diaz has worked with many students. She has helped children persevere through difficult moments, learn and grow. Because of the new career opportunity, our farewell to Ms. Diaz is bittersweet. The students, parents, and staff of SJB will miss her.
Welcome to Mrs. McGowan
SJB welcomes its new classroom aide, Mrs. Tracy McGowan.
Mrs. McGowan will begin as a classroom aide on Monday, October 18. She is no stranger to the school. She's been a full-time teacher in both the middle school and lower school at SJB and, for the past several years, while raising her two teenage sons, has been a substitute teacher on almost every grade level in the school.
Ms. McGowan has an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Developmental Reading from Loyola University of Maryland.
Mrs. McGowan is excited about returning to SJB. During her free time, she loves to read, play tennis and walk her rescue dogs, Penny and Chance.
Erin Tervo Scholarship Awarded to Petros Anteneh in 8th Grade

The Erin Tervo Memorial Scholarship was awarded to 8th grade student Petros Anteneh, whose picture above was taken a few years ago. Congratulations, Petros, on this great honor.
The $4,000 scholarship goes annually to an 8th grade student with unique positive qualities -- love for math and performance, kindness and service to all -- that we remember in Erin Tervo, a teacher who died unexpectedly six years ago at the end of the first week of school.
The award was announced Tuesday night on a video-call by Mrs. Tervo's oldest daughter, Shannon, who was joined by sisters Megan and Caitlin, father Jon Tervo, grandparents, several aunts and uncles, the members of the faculty selection committee, former SJB Principal Marianne Moore, and last year's award winner Katelyn Trebel.
Sitting by Petros were father Anteneh Girma, mother Freh Jiffar, and 4th grade sister Helina.
Petros is applying to several Catholic high schools and says he wants to become an engineer, like his mother. He plays bass clarinet in the SJB band and is captain of his soccer team. In our last live school performance, the 2019 Christmas concert, Petros sang part of a song solo in the church to great applause.
