Please Remember to Schedule Your Parent-Teacher Conference -- Go to this online sign-up form, which we've re-opened until 11:30 pm Thursday, Oct. 31. We will send the conference schedule to you by email on Friday, Nov. 1, and in the Gold Folder next week.

Parent-teacher conferences will take place after school on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 6-7. Child care will be available in the large Study across from the school office while parents attend their child's conference.

There will be conferences from 3:30 to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

There will be conferences from 3:30 to 4:50 pm and from 6:00 to 7:50 pm on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Halloween Parade Rain Plan --  If it rains, we will have the Halloween parade in the gym. If the weather is tolerable, we will have the parade in the parking lot.

Students will eat lunch and have recess early on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Grades        Lunch                   Recess

K-4           11:30-11:50            11:50-12:10

5-8           11:50-12:10            11:30-11:50

Students come to school out of uniform and bring a costume to change into at 12:10, as soon as lunch-recess is over. Parents are welcome to come to the classroom to help their child with his or her costume prior to the parade. We hope parents will be there to cheer on the kids during the parade.

After the parade, the Student Council will announce best-costume awards, and then there will be games and activities planned by the 8th graders.

Parade Guidelines -- The parade begins at about 12:30 pm, or as long as it takes to put away the tables and chairs after hot lunch, if it rains and the parade is in the gym.

Children should be able to walk unassisted with their costumes in place.

Multiple-costume plans (3 or more) should include all the girls or boys to avoid hurt feelings.

Students may not bring toy weapons or dye their hair.

Because the parade will take place in the parking lot if the weather is OK, regular parking will not be available. Please park at the Lyon Center, along the fence closest to White Oak Middle School, or along the side of the school driveway (where the dumpsters are) to Lima Street.

Reminder -- Summer Uniform Season Has Ended -- No More Shorts

Winter uniform rules took effect on Tuesday, Oct. 29, the first day of the 2nd Quarter. Students should not wear shorts with their regular uniforms or PE uniforms. Students should wear warm-up jackets and warm-up pants on PE days.

Languages Spoken in SJB Homes -- Many SJB family members speak more than one language, our survey of school parents has found.

The survey shows which languages, including English, are spoken SJB households. The results show languages and the number of households they're spoken in, including the following:

Spanish -- 19 homes
Amharic -- 11 homes
Vietnamese -- 10 homes
French -- 6 homes
Ethiopian -- 3 homes
Bengali -- 2 homes
Chinese -- 2 homes
Russian -- 2 homes
Igbo -- 2 homes
Afrikaans -- 1 home
Arabic -- 1 home
Bini -- 1 home
Bamileke -- 1 home
Bulgarian -- 1 home
Czech -- 1 home
Greek -- 1 home
Italian -- 1 home
Korean -- 1 home
Portuguese -- 1 home
Tagalog -- 1 home
Telegu -- 1 home
Tiriginya -- 1 home
Ukrainian -- 1 home

The survey was sent out over two weeks, and 107 of SJB's 160 households responded (about 67 percent). Nine respondents said a language other than the languages listed was spoken in their homes.
We would like to include the full list, so if you responded that someone in your home speaks a language "other" than the 74 languages listed, please send me an email with the name of the language spoken in your home, and I will add it to the list.
Thank you, SJB families, for participating in the survey.   We believe cultural diversity is a strength in our school community, and it's gratifying to see the broad representation of cultures in detail.

Please remember to check the Gold Folder for information on SJB events and activities including International Night on Nov. 15.

Area of Play During Recess -- We've tightened up the area of play for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade during recess. As long as the field is dry, the students may play on the field, playground, and on the blacktop/parking lot from the 5th grade classroom to the basketball courts. When the field is wet and off limits, the students will be permitted to play all the way up to the steps to the church. We have three paid, daily recess monitors. The tighter space allows the adults to supervise the children more closely. We would welcome the help of parent volunteers at recess as long as the parents have child-protection certification.

Students Will See Frederick Douglass Performance Friday

Students will watch a performance of "Frederick Douglass"  by Bomani, a story teller with a hip-hop delivery style, on Friday afternoon starting at 1:45 pm. Bomani, a seasoned performer, veteran of CBS radio, and director of poetry events at Busboys and Poets, will lead students on a tour of Douglass's life and career through multimedia presentations and song.

After Douglass escapes slavery on the Maryland Eastern Shore, he uses his powers as a writer and orator to fight slavery. in Bomani's show, the audience follows Douglass to Baltimore, New York, London, and Washington, DC. And the audience learns that one of Douglass's great strengths was his capacity for and understanding of the written words of others.

We are grateful to Bomani for agreeing to perform for the children of SJB. The Single Carrot Theater Company, originally scheduled to perform "Rumpled," cancelled its Friday performance.

All Saints Liturgy -- We will celebrate All Saints Day by attending 8:30 am Mass as a school on Friday, Nov. 1. This Holy Day Mass is open to all parishioners, but we extend a special invitation to school parents. Our 3rd grade students will host the liturgy.
