Principal's Note 11/14/18

Here's SJB's Snow Day Policy

St. John the Baptist follows the decision of Montgomery County Public Schools regarding school cancellations, delayed openings, and early closings due to inclement weather.

Parents are urged to check a reliable new source, such as WTOP Radio, to find out if Montgomery County Public Schools are closed or delayed. The school system usually announces its decision by 5 am.

If Montgomery County Public Schools are scheduled to be closed for a reason other than weather, such as professional development for teachers, parents should listen for the Archdiocese of Washington announcement about Catholic schools.

If Montgomery County Public Schools announces that schools will be closed early, SJB will close early, and After Care and all after-school activities will be cancelled. Parents are advised to listen for the announcement when snow or ice is forecast. The school will try to notify parents by email and text. The school's full policy can be found on pages 11-12 of the Parent Handbook.

Here's a tip: Sign up for the text alert service of Montgomery County Public Schools, and have emergency weather announcements texted to you.

Thank you for the Terrific Turnout for Parent Conferences

Thank you, parents, for the terrific support for your children and SJB by turning out for the parent conferences last week.

Meals To Be Delivered Friday

Each grade has been collecting everything needed to make a great Thanksgiving meal, and on Friday we plan to deliver the meals to nearby needy families. Thank you for your generous donations, SJB families!

Remember to Check the Parent Portal

This is especially important for parents of students in grades 4-8. Teachers have been posting daily assignments and unit-ahead information on the Parent Portal since the beginning of the year.

Don't Wait for an Email Notice

Homework assignments are typically posted each afternoon by 4:00 pm without any email notification to parents.

An email notice went out with assignments on our old online homework and grading system. With our previous system, one teacher posted the assignments for each grade. With our current system, the Parent Portal, each teacher posts assignments and class information.

For example, the "unit ahead" information gives an overview of the topics that students will be studying over the next few weeks. It may list the chapters they'll be reading, problems they'll be solving, projects they'll be doing, tests they'll be taking. The unit ahead information is posted on the class summary page.

To see the class summary, log in to the Parent Portal. At the top of the SJB website, there is a sign in prompt that will take you to the Parent Portal.  When you are on the Portal, look for your child's name and then look for a Classroom tab to the right. If you don't see a Classroom tab, select "More..." and then you should see the Classroom tab.

After selecting Classroom, select the name of the class from the drop-down list, and then select Class Page. You should see a Portal page with the Class SummaryAnnouncementsFiles, and Links.

No School on Wednesday Before Thanksgiving

Full Day on Tuesday

St. John the Baptist will have a full day of school on Tuesday, Nov. 20. There will be no school for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, Nov. 21; Thursday, Nov. 22; or Friday, Nov. 23. Classes resume on Monday, Nov. 26.

For the most up-to-date school calendar information, check the SJB online calendar or, even better, sync it to your own calendar.

Here are upcoming dates:

Our Thanksgiving Liturgy will begin at 1:45 on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and it will be hosted by the 1st grade. Families are welcome to join us.

The School Advisory Board and Home School Association Meeting will be Monday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 pm in the Library.

Dress for the Weather

Our inclination is to send students outside for recess even when it's cold, so please send children prepared with hats, coats, and gloves for the coming winter weather. We will keep the children inside when our recess supervisors feel that it's too cold to be outside. We don't use a temperature threshold because wind and humidity are factors. If  students could get frostbite, the students will stay inside. If it's raining, the students will stay inside. Otherwise, they'll probably go outside.

Breakfast with Santa Ticket Orders

Please remember to send in your ticket order for Breakfast with Santa, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 1. Fill out a ticket order now to make sure that you get your seats for the 8:30 am or 10:30 am session. Send your form to Tanya Pittas at tipittas@gmail.com.

Breakfast with Santa is a major event sponsored each year by the Home and School Association and a highlight of the Christmas season for school families, alumni, and parish families. Please consider signing up  to volunteer. Contact HSA President Rachelle Amador with any questions. She can be reached at rachelleamador815@gmail.com

What is the Secret Santa Shop?

The Secret Santa Shop runs concurrently and in between both sessions of Breakfast With Santa on Dec. 1. Have your child stop by before, during, or after your session with Breakfast With Santa. It takes place in the Large Study room across from the school office. We decorate it to be fun and festive and setup tables filled with gifts that your children can buy for their friends and family. Each item is priced to be affordable to them, ranging from $1 - $6 so that they can buy for all their loved ones. Parents usually stand outside the door if their children are shopping for them. Then they shop on their own with the assistance of volunteers from students in grades 6-8, SJB alumni, and parent volunteers. The kids have a ton of fun buying gifts on their own, it builds confidence, and teaches them math and budgeting. But best of all, they learn the joy of giving.

What kinds gifts can you donate to the Secret Santa Shop?

Think like a child: Most dads don’t need another coffee mug, but children love buying their fathers gifts that say “I Love Dad,” for example. So we try to stock the shop with gifts that will appeal to children, not necessarily the recipients. Kids gravitate toward fun-looking and colorful gifts. Contact Crystal Vinson (cryspyfry@gmail.com / 240-997-3650) or Jen Margiotta (jenbmargiotta@gmail.com / 240-432-6478) with any questions or if you need more guidance.

Donations for the Secret Santa Shop Extended!

Thank you to those who’ve already signed up to donate dollars and gifts. This is the last week to donate dollars, so please send anything you’d like to contribute back in the gold folder on Thursday or Venmo Jen at jenbmargiotta@gmail.com. We’re accepting gifts until 11/29. Please drop off items at the school office and drop a note about it to Crystal Vinson (cryspyfry@gmail.com / 240-997-3650) or Jen Margiotta (jenbmargiotta@gmail.com / 240-432-6478) for pickup. Many thanks in advance for your generosity.

Do You Need to Update Your Virtus Certification?

If you became Virtus certified in 2013 or earlier, you will need to update your volunteer certification by getting a new background check. The process doesn't take long. Call Martha Kerley in the Parish Office at 301-622-1122 and schedule a background check. Bring two government ID's for your appointment, and you should be finished in under 10 minutes. The new background check became necessary when the Archdiocese Child Protection Office started using a more advanced digital background check system in December of 2013. Thank you for your cooperation in the name of child safety.

The Week After Thanksgiving Has Opened For Lunch Duty

If you are looking for some dates to serve lunch-recess duty, the school days from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30 have been unblocked and can be reserved. The lunch-duty signup link can be found on the Volunteer page and on the School Lunch page.  Just follow the link, select an available date, select an available classroom, and then sign up for the open slot. There's no need to register.

2019-20 Registration Starts Jan. 11

Registration for the following school year is done on TADS. Here are the steps in the process of re-enrolling children.

1. Make registration payment of $500, which counts toward next year's tuition, when you re-register on TADS in January.

2. Complete re-registration for each child (but just one $500 payment).

3. Complete the parish verification form in March and send it to the school office. It is parish policy that this form must be completed each year for a parish discount.

4. Complete Tuition Agreement in April.

  • Email from TADS will contain link to tuition payment proposals
  • Respond to email by following link to TADS to review tuition payment proposals
  • Contact Karen Kuzemka in Parish Office if you have a question about the tuition you've been charged. Please note that credit for tuition assistance may be applied after the agreement has been submitted.
  • Select the tuition payment proposal you prefer and accept the agreement.
  • Register Now for SJB Intramural Basketball Leagues K-8th

Registration for SJB Intramural Basketball is now open for all students in grades K-8th. The grades 3rd-6th Boys League, informally referred to as the Starbucks League, will play Saturday mornings beginning Dec. 8. The Grades 3rd-6th Girls League will also start on Dec. 7 or 8. The Co-ed League for 7th and 8th graders will be held on either Friday or Saturday nights beginning the weekend of Dec. 7. Kids in grades K-2nd will start playing on Saturdays in January. No practices, just games! Registered CYO players also are encouraged to sign up for intramural hoops -- the more court time, the better! It's fun and it brings the SJB Community together. All intramural games will be played in the SJB gym. The leagues are open to all grade appropriate students, parishioners, and any age appropriate player from any other school. Register or learn more at SJB Athletics. Let's hoop it up, SJB!
