Christmas Program
We hope to see everyone for the Christmas Program on Thursday night, Dec. 19. It will begin at 7 pm in the Church, but students should come to their classrooms at 6:30 pm. Students should arrive dressed according to the guide, What To Wear, which appears below.
There's a dress rehearsal at 10:30 AM on Wednesday (Dec. 18). Parents and family members are welcome to watch. The Wednesday matinee has traditionally been a popular show with grandparents.
Teachers will lead classes from their classrooms to the gym at 6:50 pm. Students will come with their classes into the church at 7 pm. The procession of students will go through the side and center aisles of the church, so it is important that church aisles remain clear.
Students will sit in the transepts, the side seating sections of the church. Kindergarten and grades 1 and 2 will be seated in the first four rows of the main section of the church. Reserved pews will be marked.
Seating for Families
Parents or relatives are welcome to come as early as 6 pm to sit in the church and save seats. Dropping coats to save seats and leaving the church isn't permitted. We will collect unattended coats and hang them up in the church closet before the show.
Dismissal and Reception in the Gym after the Program
After the program, all children will be dismissed from the church and will return with their teachers to their classrooms.
Parents of students in Kindergarten and grades 1 and 2 should pick up their children in their classrooms and take them to the gym.
Preschool children will sit with their parents right after their song.
Students in grades 3-8 will come to the gym with their classes, led by their teachers. Parents of students in grades 3-8 can meet their children in the gym.
Students are asked to take a drink and no more than two cookies at the reception. Parents, please help us by reminding the children not to run in the gym. It can get crowded, and we expect grandparents for the reception.

Christmas Liturgy and Shower for Baby Jesus
Our school Christmas Liturgy and Shower for Baby Jesus will begin at 10:45 am on Friday, Dec. 20. Shortly after Mass, children will be dismissed at 12 noon for Christmas Vacation. Parents are welcome to come for Mass. Parents who come for Mass should park pick-up style, in line facing the Kazista Center (Library and Kindergarten). Remember there's no After Care on Friday, Dec. 20.
During the Mass, children will bring up items to be blessed as part of the Shower for Baby Jesus. The toys are collected for children of Mary House, a shelter for homeless families and support network for immigrants and refugees.

SJB Art Club Helps Those in Need
Seventh Grade Art Club students used their artistic skills to help those struggling in our local community. They painted and decorated keepsake boxes for breast cancer patients and survivors in hopes of lifting their spirits and bringing them comfort during a time of healing. The students wrote messages of encouragement, made a beaded bracelet and filled their box with cozy socks, peppermints and tissues with inspirational messages on them. The boxes were donated to For 3 Sisters, a local breast cancer non-profit organization based in Olney.

What We Do When It Snows
St. John the Baptist follows the decisions of Montgomery County Public Schools regarding school cancellations, delayed openings, and early closings.
If school closes early, After Care and after-school activities will be cancelled. Please arrange for your child to be picked up early from school. I
Communication When School is Closing for Weather
Primary notification will come from Montgomery County Public Schools through the media. Please check a reliable media outlet, such as WTOP closings, for decisions on school closings, or sign up for a weather alert with MCPS.
SJB will notify families of an early school closing decision by text and email. Also, check SJBSilverSpring Twitter.
Communication to parents works only when family contact information is correct. Please update email addressed on your TADS Household page. If you update your email address on TADS, please also notify the school secretary by email (georgine.baugher@sjbsilverspring.org) so that we can update the class email list.
Please Dress Children for Weather
Please send children to school with warm coats, hats, and gloves on cold days. The children will play outside for recess on most cold winter days. If conditions are dangerous or miserable, we will have indoor recess. We do not set a strict temperature point for outdoor recess. We do take seriously the recommendations of our recess monitors. A 24-degree day may be tolerable if it's sunny, and the air is dry and still. A 28-degree day may be intolerable with high winds, cloudy skies, and moisture.Community Service Opportunities at SJB
Immigrant Students in Need of Coats, Hats and Gloves -- Each year, High Point High School has welcomed a new group of immigrant students from Central America. This year, over 120 students will be spending their first winter in the United States. St. John the Baptist has supported the students by providing them with warm winter clothing. High Point is seeking help again this year. Please consider donating new or gently used winter coats, adult sizes small and medium are mostly needed - preferably blue or black. 75% of the students are male, so more men's jackets are needed than women's. Hats and gloves will also be appreciated! This year’s coat drive will run through December. Please call Cynthia Norris 301-622-1122 or email her at socialconcerns@sjbssparish.org, for more information. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office in the Kazista Center.
