A Summary of Recent SJB Grants

Over the past two years, the school has applied for several federal pandemic-reliefgrants through the Maryland State Department of Education.

Here’s a summary of what the school has received:

  • Chromebooks for students in Kindergarten through grade 8 – savings $100,000

  • Promethean interactive educational boards in 9 classrooms – savings $50,000

  • New desktop computers for teachers – savings $40,000

  • Thirty-minute reading tutoring three days per week for 30 targeted students

  • New picnic table

The grants benefit students and school families. The Chromebook grants enabled SJB to become 1-to-1 in the student-to-device ratio in less than a year. To pay for the items without grants, the school and H.S.A. would need to raise money and spread purchases over three years. In 2018, the H.S.A. began planning the $70,000 replacement of 75 student desktop and teacher computers. The75-inch Promethean ActivPanel 9educational boards replaced 10-year-old Smartboards near the end of their life.

The school continues to strive for the right balance of technology in education. By requiring that students use school Chromebooks, the school is able to monitor student technology use through GoGuardian.

In addition to pandemic-relief grants, the school applies regularly to the state for safety and non-public school grants for projects including preschool improvement, emergency-fire system replacement, sink replacements in the bathrooms, and the recent installation of five outside surveillance cameras.

Black History Jeopardy Returns

February is Black History Month, and once again for Black History Month our students and classes will compete in Black History Month Jeopardy. Grade-level teams will play against each other for two rounds in the first two weeks of February, and then the top teams from each grade will play against each other in the gym in the final two weeks for the tournament championship.

The SJB Diversity Committee, made up of parents and faculty, designed and planned the tournament to be fun and educational. Each grade has four games in February, and each game lasts 40 minutes. Teachers set times for the in-class games. The school-wide tournament games are written into the class schedules for February.

Thank you to the Diversity Committee parents who did the research and work on the packets of Black History questions. There are two sets of questions: one set of questions for the lower grades (1-4) and one set of questions for the upper grades (5-8).  The lower-grade packets are being distributed this week in paper form, and the upper-grade packets are posted on each student's Chromebook Clever page.
