After Care Changes in 2019-20

We are offering more After-Care plans for the 2019-20 school year, simplifying and raising our drop-in rates.

After Care hours will remain the same: 3-6 pm on regular school days and 12-4 pm on half days.

Families will be billed monthly for After Care through the school office. Parents with children in a 5-day, 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day plan will be required by Sunday to notify the After Care director of the days that their children will be in After Care in the coming week.

All preschool-age children will be required to join an After Care plan. We will not be able to allow preschool children to come to After Care on a drop-in basis.

Our purpose in making these changes is to provide as much consistency to the After Care program as we can. We have based our rates on the rates of nearby schools. We would like more families to adopt After Care plans so that we can better plan the appropriate number of staff members for students, particularly for our 3-year-old and 4-year-old preschool students.

The After Care registration fee of $30 will continue to be paid on TADS.

SJB will offer Morning Care from 7 to 10 am on Friday, May 3, at $8 per hour. Morning Care takes place in the room across from the school office.

Lunch Grills on Half-Day Fridays May 10 & 24

Lunch will be offered after school on Friday, May 10, and on Friday, May 24, after 12 noon dismissal. The cost of the grill lunch is $5, and proceeds go toward 8th grade graduation activities.

Also, 8th grade T-shirts are being shipped and should arrive at the school in the next few days, according to the 8th grade room parents. We will send the shirts home with the students who ordered them when they arrive.

A Message to Parents from Our Career Day Coordinator

Career Day is quickly approaching, on Friday, May 10. The students will see presentations from 8:30 to 11:30 am, and we still have a few slots to fill. Presentations are 25 minutes with five minutes in between to switch classes. If you are able to talk with the kids about your career, please contact Courtney Gardner at courtneycgardner@gmail.com or 301/642-8514. Thank you and your time is greatly appreciated.

After-School Tennis Registration

Here is the registration form for an after-school tennis program run by SJB parents. Although the children meet at SJB, this isn't a school program. The parent coaches walk the children to White Oak for tennis instruction.

Remember to Put Aside Items for Ms. Moore's West Virginia Trip

Easter vacation is on the horizon! If you decide to do some spring cleaning out, please remember that Ms. Moore will be making her 21st annual trip to West Virginia in June.  She is happy to pass along to the families in Appalachia gently used baby and children's clothing, all sorts of linens (sheets, towels. blankets, pillows), household items and personal hygiene items (even travel sizes).

Beginning on Monday, May 6, families may put donated items in the gym stairwell. Please put loose items in a bag and mark the bag "WV."

Books for St. Camillus

It's not too late to clean out your bookshelves and donate to a good cause. We are still collecting books for the children whose families go to the St. Camillus Food Pantry. All books in good condition from pre-K to Grade 8 are gratefully accepted. Please bring in your donations by NEXT Friday, May 10. Thank you!

Remember to Label Items Brought to School

Please remember to label any items that you bring to the school or that your children bring to the school. We have plenty of extra labels in the office if you want to use one. The labels help us keep track of the items that are lent to us for events such as the Spring Play and Breakfast with Santa.

Please use a strip of masking tape to write your name on the bottom of any bowl, plate, or pan that you send into the school for Teacher Appreciation or for holidays or classroom activities.

Seeking School Directory Helper

We are looking for a parent volunteer who is willing to take on the job of creating and printing the school directory. This is a task done over the summer. For the past several years, Nancie Tassara (Sofia 8th) has created and printed the directory. Mrs. Tassara is willing to act as a mentor to the new directory writer. She will be available through June to help get the new directory started. Mrs. Tassara has used a spreadsheet program and arranged for its printing. All of the expenses are covered by the school.

Interested in School Board?

The SJB School Board is looking for a few good candidates for its board.  Here are the openings:

  • 1-year-term as Governance Chair
  • 1-year-term as Public Relations Chair
  • 1-year term as Nominations Chair
  • 2-year-term as Treasurer

If you have any interest in any of these positions, contact the principal at brian.blomquist@sjbsilverspring.org.

There Are Openings for Lunch Duty

Do you still need to make your quota of five lunch-duties? There are spots open for lunch duty. Go here to sign up.

Parish Verification Forms Overdue

To be eligible for the sibling discount and/or the Catholic rate, a completed Parish Verification Form must be provided to the school office each year. If you haven't seen in your form, please send it in soon. To receive the Catholic rate, outside parishioners must submit a Parish Verification Form with their pastor’s signature (or an attached letter from their pastor). Families may use the Parish Verification Form to request parish tuition assistance. A printable Parish Verification Form can always be found on the Tuition page of the school website.

Remember To Submit Your Tuition Agreement

It's the Final Step in Enrollment

  • You will receive an email from TADS with a tuition agreement over the next few weeks. If you don't see it, check your junk folder, or log into TADS and go to Agreements.
  • Select a tuition payment plan and select "submit."
  • Complete this step by May 31 to avoid a $100 Late Agreement Fee.

Registration, enrollment, and tuition are done on TADS.

Registration is completed in January through April to help the school set enrollment for the 2019-20 school year. After completing registration, there is one enrollment step left: submitting a tuition payment plan.

Tuition payment plans are emailed by TADS. You will need to choose your tuition payment plan by June 1 or you will be charged a fee of $100. If you miss the June 1 deadline, you must submit your tuition payment plan by June 15 or you will be charged a fee of $150.

Please call the TADS parent support line  if you have questions about your TADS account. Phone: 612.548.3320 or 800.477.8237

Here's the Schedule for End-of-year Scantron Tests

We want the end-of-year Scantron tests to reflect the mathematics and reading abilities of our students when they are at their best. Please help by making sure that the children get a full night's rest and a nutritious breakfast before their Scantron tests. Parents will receive end-of-year Scantron data in June. The information will include the child's national percentile scores in reading and math and the child's progress from September to May.
