Principal's Note 9/3/17

Dear SJB Families,

On Tuesday morning, SJB will open its new preschool.

The first day of school is always a big day at SJB. This one will be even bigger. The preschool opening marks the first expansion of SJB in 24 years – since all-day Kindergarten began in 1993.

We have a little ceremony planned for the 8:05 am opening. Our K-8 classes are planning to come down for the opening. Catholic Schools Superintendent Bill Ryan says he will be there. We will have a ribbon cutting and a pre-K procession, led by our 4-year olds, into the new classroom, as well as a classroom blessing.

If you would like to stop by for the ceremony, we would love to see you. The ceremony should last just a few minutes.

As soon as it is over, at about 8:15, we will have our Welcome Back Coffee in the Lyon Center for all of our school parents. We hope you can come.

Reminders:

  • Dismissal on the first day of school is at 12 noon.
  • The Gold Folder and Principal’s  Note will go home on Wednesday this week.
  • Back to School Night will begin at 6:30 pm in the church.
  • Our Back-to-School Liturgy is on Friday at 1:45 pm.
  • We have new parking procedures.

Parking This Week – I want to prepare everyone for our slightly new drop-off procedure. The Lyon Center parking lot will be for preschool drop-off and pick-up only. Our K-8 families must use the big parking lot. Drop-off in front of the church will be permitted to continue, as well.

Our regular procedure in the big lot is for parents to drive to the end of the car-pool lane and to drop off children along the Gold Line. After dropping off their children, parents may pull around to a parking space, park their cars, and then walk up to join their children as they wait for the classroom doors to open. For the safety of all of our children, we prohibit parents from walking with their children across the school parking lot during morning drop-off.

However, we make an exception for the first two days of school. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, we will allow parents to park in the main lot and walk with their children to the school. With this in mind, we ask drivers to be on the lookout for children on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. We ask parents who are walking with their children to stay on the side of the parking lot. Drivers will not expect to see children crossing the carpool lane, so please try to avoid crossing it.

We want your children to enjoy their second day of school as much as their first.  I look forward to seeing you and your children on Tuesday morning.

School Calendar

Our SJB calendar will be going home with the students. We want to thank Mrs. Trebel (Katelyn 5th) for the photography, design and printing. We love the cover.

Please remember to check the online calendar for the most accurate and updated information. Dates of events sometimes change.

The online calendar is posted on the school website. You can have school events imported to your own Google calendar. To make this work, log into your Google account and go into Google settings, select the Calendar tab, and then select Import Calendar. When prompted, click Browse and enter https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/sjbsilverspring%40gmail.com/public/basic.ics for the filename. It will find and load the school events -- 830 of them -- onto your calendar.

Fall After School Programs 2017

Science

Grades K-2   NEW

Icky, Gross, Spooky ScienceWhat young scientist doesn’t like a little mess and fun while learning to do science? Kids will use household products to create substances that might seem gross but are often useful. We will try our hand at making glue, plastic and fake blood. We'll make Ph from cabbage juice. We won't save the best for last though. We will concoct our own gravity-defying GOO and finish with all scientists' favorite—Fun Fantastic Explosions!

Grades 3-5  NEW

Forensic Biology Fun—8 Weeks of biology based forensic experiments in our portable labs. Students will extract their own DNA, solve a mystery of Who ate the cheese? with DNA fingerprinting, bone measurement and analysis. We will identify gene movement using electrophoresis and discover how to use entomology (bugs) to solve crimes. We'll do the same experiments that are still used in crime labs today. Don’t miss the fun and learning. Who knows? You might be on the next “CSI –Howard County."

Altar Server Training -- Training for new altar servers will be held in early October.  If your child is in the 4th – 12th grade and is interesting in becoming a server, please contact Anne Thomas (e-mail anne.thomas@grace.com or  text 301-908-7522) or Susan DeCamp (call the parish office at 301-622-1122).
