School Communication Through the Principal's Note
Each week, usually on Tuesday, we try to tell our families about school events and activities through the Principal's Note and Gold Folder, the yellow folder that goes home with one child (the oldest student) in each family. You are reading the Principal's Note.
We are often asked to include a flyer in the Note and in the Gold Folder. We are happy to spread the news about upcoming events. We ask only for consideration of the time that it takes to compile the Note and fill the folders. Because the folders are stuffed with scheduled volunteer help on Tuesday morning, we require that items be sent to the school by Monday afternoon at 4 pm, when they can be printed and set aside for the morning.
Flyers and informational blurbs for the Note and Folder should be sent to tuesdayfolder@sjbsilverspring.org by 4 pm Monday. The email address inbox is shared by everyone in the school office. Flyers will be printed in black and white and placed in the folders on Monday. If parents want to print flyers in color and deliver them to the school by Monday at 4 pm, we will place the flyers in the folders. If someone misses a deadline, we can usually offer the person access to the folders and time to come in an stuff them.
We support extracurricular activities at SJB and promote them on the Gold Folder webpage, which aims to be the digital version of the take-home folder. There are limits to the items included in the weekly Note. An education-related blurb, suggested by a parent, may run for one week in the Note and thereafter on the Gold Folder webpage. We decline to run information about commercial services if we don't see the connection to SJB and the benefit to our students.
Congratulations, Student Council Candidates
Congratulations to all of the students who ran for Student Council. The students gave speeches before an assembly of the school last Friday.
Home Access to Educational Websites
Parents, did you know that you and your children have subscriptions to several educational websites? The website list and home access information can be found on the Rediker Parent Portal under School Links and Files. Through the SJB Library, the school provides access to BrainPOP, World Book, Scholastic Go!, CultureGrams, SIRS Discoverer, and IXL Math and Language Arts. There are two files -- one for home access and one for school access. World Book is an online encyclopedia for the children, parents, and teachers. SIRS is part of the ProQuest research database, and CultureGrams provides information about the 50 states and places in the world. BrainPOP provides academic enrichment in all subjects.

We Are Blessed
Celebrating SJB's Community and Diversity
The item below was submitted by Mrs. Jenkins for our Parish Bulletin
The first month of school is an exciting time for any grade. Meeting new friends and learning new things is an adventure. The 31 students in the 4th grade started off the school year by learning about four different types of social scientists. Decorating different “hats” that a historian, political scientist, geographer, and economist might wear was a fun activity that the class loved. Who knows, maybe some of these students will pursue a career path in one of those fields.
Artifacts help us learn about the past and can serve as important symbols to link generations. Students brought many interesting artifacts from home that were special to them and their family. Through the sharing of the various artifacts, which included statues, pictures, books, etc., students learned more about each other. Learning about each other and appreciating our differences is something emphasized at SJB.
It is amazing to imagine that a school community as small as SJB is comprised of so many different cultures. One way we embrace our differences is by celebrating them. International Night at SJB school is right around the corner! Please join us to celebrate our 55 heritages and 38 languages represented in our school. Our annual event will take place on Friday, October 5, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
It will take place in the gymnasium. Enjoy all of our international booths and then wind your way over to our international foods made by many of our families. So many types of food will be available to sample including Vietnamese, Thai, German, Italian, American, and Portuguese. One much anticipated event of the evening will be a "Parade of Nations" starting at 7:20, where many of our students dress in their home country's traditional wear. Once you have sampled the delicious food and visited the many display tables, pull up a seat and enjoy the entertainment program of music, singing, dancing, and storytelling from the various countries represented at our school. It's a wonderful opportunity to see the wide range of talents our children have!
Celebrate with us on International Night, Friday, October 5, 2018, beginning at 7:00 pm. If you have any questions about International Night, please call the school office at 301 622-3077. Mark your calendars and look forward to a night filled with the diversity that makes SJB a special place.
