The scholarship is selected each year by the Erin Tervo Memorial Scholarship Committee, which is chaired by a family member and made up of teachers. Father Andrew, the parish pastor, introduced the members of the family who came for the award and the show: Megan Tervo and her sister Caitlin Tervo; their father and Erin's surviving husband, Jon Tervo; Mrs. Tervo's brother Patrick McCauley and Mrs. Tervo's parents, Dr. Paul McCauley and Kathleen McCauley. We hope that your Easter season has been joyful. We are excited about the learning activities and events we have planned for the final two months of the school year. A partial (87%) solar eclipse will occur during the last hour of the school day and through dismissal (2:04-4:33 pm) on Monday, April 7. Although we will have a regular school day, we understand that some families may want to pick up children early. We ask that parents request early pickup using this form . Parents who use the online request form will not need to sign the early-dismissal form at the office, and there will be no half-day attendance marking for students who are picked up at 1 pm on later. The eclipse provides an opportunity for the children to learn about the sun, moon, Earth, and what happens in an eclipse. Some classes are planning to make pinhole cameras in the morning for eclipse viewing in the afternoon. We are not planning a whole-school viewing because we do not have eclipse glasses for everyone. Teachers are planning to explain to the students in the morning that it is not safe to look at the sun, even during an eclipse, without special eclipse-viewing glasses. Here are a few eclipse related resources: The Great American Eclipse on Nova on PBS The National Science Foundation eclipse fact sheet Eclipse Safety from NASA Looking Ahead at SJB Summer uniform season begins Monday, April 8 . Thank You for Your Help with Arts & Academics - - We wish to thank our parent volunteers who helped as judges for Arts & Academics, as well as the middle-school parents who responded to the Arts & Academics parent survey that went out on Tuesday. The school is getting similar feedback from teachers, students, and alumni. The information will help us improve in the ways we prepare our students and plan our academic program. It was wonderful to see many families come here for the Arts & Academics gallery walk on Wednesday night. Thank you, especially, to Mrs. Castillo and Mrs. Leishear for coordinating the set-up and judging. Thank you to Mike Irwin and family (Vincent 6th, Nora 3rd, Caroline 3rd, Isaac 1st) for staying to the end to put away tables and chairs. 4th Grade Presidential Speeches -- The 4th grade students dressed as historic presidents and gave speeches in front of an audience in the Lyon Center last week. The students prepared well and delivered excellent speeches. Thank you to Mrs. Martin for preparing them, and thank you to the parents for coming out to show support for the 4th grade presidents. SJB Class of 2024 T-Shirts -- See the flyer to purchase the 8th grade Class of 2024 T-Shirt. How Volunteer Credits Are Counted -- There are no fees in this trial year of the volunteer credit program, and we are all learning as we go. Earlier this week the school sent an email listing each family's volunteer credits as recorded so far by the Home School Association tracking table. We understand that some families volunteered for more credits than had gotten credit for. We are reminding our parents that volunteer credits must be submitted by the volunteers themselves. Event coordinators then confirm the credits, and the HSA then counts the credits. We expect the number of volunteer credits to rise after more submissions are made by parent volunteers. Here is the direct link to the submission form , which was included in the email. Thank you for your efforts to comply with the program and support your school community. Living Stations on Tuesday -- On Tuesday, the students participate in a Living Stations of the Cross prayer service. Mass at 9:00 on Wednesday -- Students will attend 9:00 Mass on Tuesday of Holy Week. Half-Day Wednesday - Dismissal is 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 27.
